JnU operates under expired syndicate
Md Abdur Rakib, JnU :
Jagannath University’s Syndicate, its top policymaking body, currently operates with several members whose terms have long expired. This situation has raised concerns among the university faculty who urge that these positions be filled with newly qualified individuals.
The Syndicate at Jagannath University plays a crucial role in making key decisions for the institution. Yet, the tenure of many non-tenured elected members has lapsed, with some terms having ended as much as four years ago. Despite this, the same individuals are continuing to occupy multiple roles due to the concurrent usage of the same laws.
Under the Jagannath University Act 2005, the Syndicate consists of fifteen members, including the Vice-Chancellor, who serves as the ex-officio president. Members include the University Treasurer, two government-nominated joint-secretaries, representatives from educational and research institutions, and nominated academicians.
The Act specifies that each member’s term is limited to two years; however, they remain in their roles until successors are nominated.
Recent additions to the Syndicate include Vice-Chancellor Professor Sadeka Halim, Treasurer Professor Dr. Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, and Professor Dr. Hosne Ara, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, though some members occupy multiple positions, adding to the complexity.
Notably, the terms of government-nominated members Professor Dr. Mohammad Farasuddin and former Vice-Chancellor of the National University, Professor Dr. Harun-or-Rashid, expired back on December 8, 2021. Additionally, a Chancellor-nominated position has been vacant for an extended period.
