Abdur Rahman Mintu, Rangpur :
Farmers cultivated boro paddy in Rangpur city and 5 districts of the region in spite of many difficulties. This time the bumper yield of that rice has been achieved. But the production has become expensive.
According to the sources of the Rangpur regional office of the Directorate of Agricultural Extension, the target of 8 lakh 7 thousand 835 hectares of land has been set for boro cultivation in eight upazilas of the district including Rangpur metropolis and 5 districts of Rangpur region.
This time paddy cutting and threshing has started in many places. Many farmers are busy taking home the paddy grown in their land. However, even though various political and social organizations have volunteered to harvest the paddy of many farmers in the past years, this time there has been an exception. Farmers are not getting the help of anyone who will cut paddy voluntarily this year. Along with that, the price of labor has increased. As a result, there has been extreme frustration among the farmers.
On the surface, it has been found that Rangpur city and other places of the district are also busy with day laborers and farmers in ancillary work such as cutting, threshing, drying of paddy. Within a few days, the boro paddy field will be empty. Rice will grow in the farmer’s house. Farmers are smiling because of the bumper yield of paddy this time. However, the worker’s wages and the crisis made him depressed. This time there is no one by the side of the farmer to harvest the paddy.
Mithapukur Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Saiful Abedin said, I have inquired in the field. Boro paddy will yield well this time. At the field level, Bri-rice is rich in Zing 74, 84, Bangabandhu 100 during Boro season. High yielding BR-Dhan 28, 29, 88, 92, 96, 100, 102, 103 and BR 14. Bri-paddy 98, 85, 87, Bina 20, 21 are being cultivated as Aush. Due to bad weather, more irrigation was required, but neck blast, seat blast disease did not occur. Farmers have started harvesting and threshing paddy. He said that the yield will be good.
Some farmers of different upazilas of the district including Rangpur Sadar said that at the time of harvesting paddy, their anxiety increased due to the news of hostile weather and rain. Due to favorable weather conditions this season, the cherboro crop has been better than other years. Many people used to cut paddy from several years. At that time, he was able to save rice from natural disasters by having them by his side. But this time you are not getting anyone to your side. Also, due to the shortage of workers’ wages and shortages, they are extremely depressed.
Agriculture Extension Directorate Rangpur Regional Office Additional Director Agriculturist Md. Obaidur Rahman Mondal has had a bumper crop of Boro rice in Rangpur region this year. He said the weather was favorable. Moreover, this time the paddy plant was not affected by any other pests including rice blast disease. Overall, there has been a bumper yield of paddy.
He also said that even though the temperature is high in Rangpur region like the rest of the country, the yield of Boro and Aush rice will be good. Farmers are getting the price of paddy.
