DB arrests man who killed security guard

Staff Reporter :
Police have arrested a 27-year-old man, Ariful Islam, in connection with the fatal stabbing of a security guard at a Modhumoti Bank ATM booth in Dhaka’s Shahjadpur area on April 10th, the day before Eid-ul-Fitr.

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police apprehended Islam during a raid in Kalachandpur, Gulshan, on Sunday night.

Harun-Or-Rashid, chief of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB), revealed at a press conference to the media that Ariful’s motive stemmed from mounting financial pressure.

After his construction material supply business collapsed, Ariful found himself burdened with Tk 15 lakh in debt and fearing his creditors.

Desperation, according to DB officials, led Ariful down a dangerous path. He allegedly turned to YouTube for a solution, watching videos on how to commit ATM robberies.

Believing the Shahjadpur booth to be a soft target with fewer customers, Ariful disguised himself in a Bangladesh cricket team jersey and entered the ATM around 5:15 am on April 10th.

Tragedy unfolded when security guard Hasan Mahmud, 55, attempted to intervene during Ariful’s efforts to break into the ATM.

A struggle ensued, resulting in Ariful fatally stabbing Mahmud.

Despite his 10-12 minute attempt to access the ATM, Ariful ultimately failed and fled the scene empty-handed.

The body of. Mahmud was recovered the following morning.

Ariful, during initial questioning, reportedly confessed to his involvement in the security guard’s death.
