RMG factories in Bangladesh: Only 215 environmentally friendly

Though there are over 4,600 readymade garment (RMG) factories in the country, only 215 factories received eco-friendly certification from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
The country’s largest industrial RMG sector is contributing 36 per cent of manufacturing employment and engaging about 4.1 million workers.
Meanwhile, one more factory ‘Fashion Makers Ltd’ in Gazipur’s Sreepur Areay has received eco-friendly certification from the BGMEA on Wednesday.
According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the number of environmentally friendly factories in the country now reached to 215 out of over 4,600 factories.
In order to obtain US Green Building Council (USGBC) environmental friendly certification a factory has to filled up nine conditions.
As per USGBC condition, a factory should have to obtain scores more than 80 out of a total of 110 marks to get ‘Lead Platinum’ certificate, 60-79 marks for ‘Lead Gold’, 50-59 marks for ‘Lead Silver’ and 40-49 marks for ‘Lead Certified’ certificate.
However, the Fashion Makers Ltd. Received Platinum certificate as it is obtained 87 marks out of 110 marks from the USGBC.
According to BGMEA data, there are currently 215 eco-friendly factories in the ready-made garments and textiles sector with LEAD certification.
Of them, 81 factories received lead platinum, 120 gold, 10 silver and 4 factories have received certified certificates.
According to BGMEA, nine factories out of the world’s top 10 eco-friendly factories are now in Bangladesh.
