Khaled, Rana star as Lanka out for 280 in 1st innings

Pacers Khaled Ahmed and Nahid Rana helped Bangladesh to all out Sri Lanka for 280 in the first innings on the day one of the first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Khaled and Rana captured three wickets each for 72 and 87 runs respectively.

Later, Bangladesh were at the stumps at 32/3.

Sri Lanka lost their opener Nishan Madushka for two runs as Madushka (2) was caught at the third slip by Mehidy Hasan Miraz off Khaled Ahmed when Lanka’s total was just three runs.

After Madushka’s dismissal, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis repaired the damage adding together 37 runs for the second wicket partnership before Kusal Mendis (16) was caught at the gully by Zakir Hasan off Khaled Ahmed when the tourists’ total was 40 for the loss of two wickets.

After Kusal’s dismissal, Karunaratne could not stay at the crease for a long period as he (17) was bowled out by Khaled Ahmed when the visitors’ score was 41 for the loss of three wickets.

Later, Sri Lanka lost more two wickets as the Islanders’ score was 57 for the loss of five wickets.

Fourth-down Dhananjaya de Silva and fifth-down Kamindu Mendis rescued their team from disaster contributing together 202 runs in the six-wicket stand before Kamindu was caught behind by wicketkeeper Litton Das off Nahid Rana when the touring side’s total was 259 for the loss of six wickets.

Kamindu Mendis notched up a sparkle 102. His 127-ball innings was belted with 11 fours and three sixes.

Then Dhananjaya de Silva was caught at deep backward square leg by Mehidy Hasan Miraz off Nahid Rana when the visitors’ score was 264 for the loss of seven wickets.

Dhananjaya hit a captain’s knock of 102. He struck 12 fours and a sixer in his 131-ball innings.

After Dhananjaya’s departure, Lanka batters failed to build any remarkable partnership.

Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam picked up one wicket each for 31 and 59 runs respectively.

Bangladesh made a painful start as opener Zakir Hasan (9) was trapped leg before wicket by Vishwa Fernando when Bangladesh’s total was 11.

After Zakir’s dismissal, one-down Najmul Hossain Shanto (5) was trapped leg before wicket by Vishwa Fernando when the hosts’ score was 17 for the loss of two wickets.

Second-down Mominul Haque (5) was caught at the third slip by Kamindu Mendis off Kasun Rajitha when the home side’s total was 31 for the loss of three wickets.

Opener Mahmudul Hasan was on 9 and third-down Taijul Islam was on naught before the bails were drawn for the first day.

Vishwa Fernando bagged two wickets in the space of nine runs, while Kasun Rajitha picked up one wicket at the cost of 20 runs.
