Fire at Chawkbazar shoe factory brought under control

The fire that broke out at a shoe factory in Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar was brought under control in around 40 minutes.

The fire started at the factory at Suarighat around 1:00pm, said Rafi Al Faruk, duty officer of the fire service control room.

On information, nine units of fire service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control around 1:40pm, he said.

The cause of the fire and casualties could not be known instantly, the fire official said.
Earlier on February 29, at least 46 people were killed, and over 20 others sustained severe injuries by a devastating fire in the capital’s Bailey Road area.

It is to be noted that as many as 102 people were killed and 281 others sustained burn injuries in 27,624 fire incidents across the country in 2023, according to Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters.

Besides, at least 24,102 fire incidents occurred across the country last year, according to statistics compiled by FSCD.

A total of 98 people, including thirteen firefighters were killed and 407 others, including thirty FSCD staff, were injured in that fire incident.
