Bhangura ‘BWDB’ colony dilapidated amid lack of renovation

Bangladesh Water Development Board’s Bhangura Colony has become dilapidated due to lack of renovation for a long time. Plants grow on the roofs of its buildings. Plasters are falling from the walls. There is a risk of collapse at any time. Besides, the boundary wall has become a dam and is about to collapse. Moreover, as there is no caretaker, an environment of anti-social activities has been created inside the colony late at night.
This colony was built on one bigha of land on the banks of Baralriver in Saratnagar market of Bhanguraupazila of Pabna during Pakistan period. It was later used as the office and residence of the Sub-Assistant Engineer, Pauby. No one lives here now. However, it is as important a place of Bhangura Municipal town in the upazila. Because of this, it is alleged that there were several attempts to occupy the area around the colony in the past.
Locals said that there are several rooms inside the colony. There were some valuable trees in its courtyard. It is said that two of these trees were cut down by someone.
HelalUddin, the owner of the tea stall in front of the colony, said that during the day, he takes water from the tubewell inside. So everything is under his watch but a permanent caretaker is needed at night.
Md. AlaminHossain, Deputy Assistant Engineer of Water Development Board, said that the old boundary wall of the colony will be demolished and a new wall will be constructed there soon. However, he said that it is not possible to rebuild the colony building without allotment of large amount of money.
The local residents have demanded from the higher authorities to quickly renovate or rebuild the old colony building of the Water Development Board.
