The demand for flowers nationwide, including the capital city, surges around Pahela Phalgun and Valentine’s Day on February 14.

It is estimated that at least Tk 15 crore worth of flowers will be sold across the country during these occasions.

Traders note that while the flower business operates year-round, it experiences heightened activity during Pahela Phalgun, Valentine’s Day, and 21 February.

Special preparations are made in advance for these occasions, resulting in bustling flower shops with increased customer traffic.

February is widely regarded as the peak month for flower trading, accompanied by a surge in demand.

Wholesale prices tend to rise during this period, subsequently impacting the retail market.

Red roses, universally recognized symbols of love and passion, experience particularly high demand during Pahela Phalgun and Valentine’s Day.

Abul Kalam, President of the Shahbagh Bottala Small Flower Traders Cooperative Society, anticipates flower sales in Dhaka city alone to reach Tk 10-12 crore during these events.

Abdur Rahim, President of the Bangladesh Flowers Society in Jashore, a key flower cultivation hub, projects sales worth Tk 30-35 crore this year around the festivals.

He reports favorable sales conditions, with farmers and florists receiving good prices for their products.

Imam Hossain, a flower grower from Jashore, recounts bringing 4,400 roses to a wholesale shop in Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, with 2,600 remaining unsold as of Tuesday afternoon.

He observes fluctuating wholesale prices due to factors like weather conditions and the import of Indian roses, which has affected local varieties.

Retail flower shops in various areas of Dhaka city, such as Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Bashundhara, and Moghbazar, are charging premium prices for roses, especially red ones.”
