Khaleda Zia taken to hospital for health check-up

Staff Reporter :
Main opposition party-BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was taken to the capital’s Evercare Hospital on Thursday afternoon for a health check-up.

“Madam (Khaleda Zia) was taken to Evercare Hospital around 6:35 pm for a health check-up, as per the advice of her medical board,” said Shamsuddin Dider, a member of the BNP chairperson’s media wing.

Dider said that the BNP chief would undergo some necessary medical tests at the hospital.

On January 11, Khaleda Zia returned home from Evercare Hospital after receiving treatment for various illnesses for over five months.

Since then, she has been receiving treatment at her Gulshan residence under the medical board that was formed earlier at the Evercare Hospital.

The BNP chief was admitted to the hospital on August 9, 2023, after she suddenly fell sick.

The 78-year-old former prime minister has long been suffering from various health complications, including arthritis, liver cirrhosis, diabetes, eye, and issues related to kidney, lung and heart.

Earlier on October 26, three US specialist doctors completed the hepatic procedure known as transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS procedure) to stop water accretion in the former premier’s stomach and chest, and bleeding in her liver.

Khaleda Zia’s physicians have been recommending sending her abroad since she was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis in November 2021.

The BNP chief’s family also submitted applications several times seeking permission from the government for taking her going abroad for higher treatment, but the government has yet to allow her going abroad.

Meanwhile, the Law Minister said Khaleda Zia has no scope to go abroad for treatment as she was released on conditions suspending her sentence in corruption cases.

Since her conditional release from jail in 2020, the BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the hospital.
