Human rights and democratic values of the time

Raihan Ahmed Tapadar :

In the 20th century, the tide of democracy swept the world system. Democracy and democratic governance were a fundamental element of the development model. In this the real fundamental rights of the people were sought.

Therefore, democracy was victorious in every country. But in the 21st century world, an attempt is being made to establish the authoritarian regime as a development model against democracy.

A campaign of development first, democracy later has been brought forward in third world countries.

As a result, the number of democratic states in the countries of the world is decreasing and on the other hand, the number of authoritarian regimes is increasing.

That is, open societies are collapsing and closed societies are increasing.
In the name of development, attempts are being made to force people into poverty under authoritarian regimes.

In these countries, bringing the entire state apparatus under the feet of a single ruler and concentrating all the state power in the hands of a small family and cyclical party, the tower of modern authoritarian rule is being built on the coffin of democracy.

And here, denying all the rights of the people, the will and reluctance of the ruler sitting on the top of the governance system is being forcibly imposed on the people.

It is not prejudged whether the people have support or not. Before the end of the Cold War, military rule was an inevitable reality in world politics. Although the trend of military intervention in post-Cold War politics has declined, it has not completely disappeared.

Military rule is still noticeable in many Afro-Asian countries. Although the military does not rule directly in some countries, it has an indirect influence. However, the military’s influence is believed to have weakened since the Cold War.

The influence of democratic governance has spread to almost every corner of the world, and the militaries of many developing countries benefit financially from participating in UN peacekeeping operations.

Although every country in the world is formally enacting various human rights charters to protect human rights, human rights are being violated again by these states.

Those who are in charge of running the state do these things. The League of Nations was formed after World War I to establish human rights. After it fails, it dies. World War II took place. The United Nations, known as the United Nations in Bengal, was formed after World War II.

To protect the human rights of people of all levels, including women, men, children, ethnic groups, refugees, residents, stateless residents, crippled, and neglected, the human rights charter has been approved through the international conference.

Rights which for some reason have been excluded from the respective human rights charters have been supplemented by international protocols.

Yet human rights have been established at all levels? What is there in any religion in the world let’s kill people, burn houses and crops, rape women, kill children.

No, there is no place for killing, no place for inhumanity in any religion. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, in one way or another, the basic message of all religions is peace and humanity.

Rights are the privileges which are recognized and approved by the state and the society and which human beings develop.

The fragile situation we all faced during the Corona and the way we showed mutual sympathy, gave us an opportunity to express human solidarity that transcended our geographical boundaries.

The pandemic served as a reminder of our common solidarity at that time. Our lesson of solidarity-sympathy has been lost again.

Many, if not all, of the post-World War II world order appear to be collapsing. Apart from peaceful measures, military conflict has now become the preferred method of settling disputes between countries and between countries.

On the other hand, the multilateral security system led by the UN Security Council is moving towards utter irrelevance.

Now the inequality gap between the Global North and the Global South has widened. Most of the countries of the Global South are sinking under the burden of debt. As a result, poverty increased. Immigration increased.

The seeds of mutual distrust have been planted. Now what have been watching in Gaza? The heinous act should be at the top of the ICC’s counsel’s priority list. This heinous act should be taken into account in the proceedings of the International Court of Justice.

The dark hole we are falling into must be stopped now. Acts against international principles such as curtailing the right to self-defense and deliberately obstructing the Security Council in ensuring international peace and security are unthinkable in the civilized world.

But that’s what happened. Senior UN humanitarian officials standing on the ground in Gaza used the phrases ‘hell on earth’ and ‘goodbye to humanity’ to express their frustration. Few people seem to have heard their cries.

There is now a disconnection between the West and the Arab and Muslim world. Western and Arab people are also angry with their leaders after seeing the hellish conditions in Gaza. The streets of their country’s cities are filled with angry speeches against the leaders.

Those angry speeches are echoing on university campuses and in small towns around the world The Arab and Muslim world feels that the West is showing itself that it has outdone itself in diabolical brutality.

They feel that the democracy, human rights and liberal values that once fueled the Arab Spring are actually tools of Western hegemony.

This mistrust is driving the current world order to death. In the era of increasing demand and competition, people have become busy with themselves willingly or unwillingly.

Even in the era of the development of civilization and the progress of modern knowledge and science, the image of violence, bloodshed, violence, hatred, vengefulness and madness is emerging almost daily in the human society, humanity is in danger today.

All human endeavors in the world revolve around the goal of living in peace. Whether the world is happy or sad may be a theoretical debate, but it is undoubtedly established that people keep themselves busy in the pursuit of safe living in the world.

Sadly, as we move towards civilization, we seem to be losing human qualities. Corona has given a big shock to this humanity.

It has shown with a finger in the eye, how much humanity we can hold. How much I can protect the interests of others. But we must not be disappointed.

We must always look to human values and ethics. Even though the fear of corona temporarily covered our behavior, it did not end. Humans still have humanity. It just needs to be awakened.
