DSCC imposes taxes for knotting ties

In the case of the first marriage, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has fixed Tk 100, but for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th marriage, the corporation has fixed Tk 5,000, 20,000 and 50,000 respectively, corporation sources confirm.

The DSCC has taken the initiative to bring in order to the marriage registration process under the corporation areas.

Standard Tax Schedule for Marriage Registration under the DSCC as per Act No 152 of 10 (4) of 2016 is Tk 100 in case of first marriage or first marriage after death of wife, Tk 5,000 in case of 2nd marriage with permission of proper authority during the lifetime of first wife, Tk 20,000 in case of 3rd marriage with permission of proper authority during wife’s lifetime, Tk 50,000 in case of 4th marriage also with the permission of proper authority during the lifetime of the first three wives.

If the first wife is mentally unstable or barren (in that case the tax mentioned in a, b, c and d will not be applicable).

However, in case of subsequent marriages, marriage registration tax of Tk 200 has to be deposited with the corporation’s revenue section.

All the concerned authorities have been directed to follow the city corporation guidelines.

The corporation claims that with the marriage registration, things will be organized and enriched with information, as well as provide relevant information to other organizations and making decisions, especially in the case of divorce, will be used as a basis in the future.

At the same time, the corporation’s revenue collection will be increased.

The chief executive officer of the corporation, Mizanur Rahman, stated that the divorce is an unexpected thing for everyone.

But still in terms of reality marriage breakup takes place. Although divorce information comes to the corporation, we do not have any information regarding marriage registration.

But as a local government body it is mandatory as per City Corporation Act.
