2 killed, while trying to stay warm in Rangpur

At least two persons were killed and 55 sustained burns in the Rangpur Medical College Hospital while trying to stay warm by burning straw since the beginning of the New Year.

One of the two who died in the last 24 hours is Nasreen Begum (35), a resident of Tajhat area of Rangpur Nagar. She died on Sunday morning. Apart from this, Amena Begum (60), a resident of Pirgacha Upazila of Rangpur, died on Saturday.

ccording to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of the hospital, in the last 13 days (until Sunday afternoon), 42 patients were admitted due to burns injuries while trying to stay warm by burning straw and using hot water in winter. Of these, 11 are in the burn unit and 31 are in the surgery, children’s and women’s wards.

Efforts are underway to provide the best possible treatment to these burn victims, with a focus on creating awareness about fire safety, RMCH doctors say.

Many of the affected people, primarily women and children, reported sustaining burns while attempting to create a fire or using hot water to keep themselves warm in the cold weather.

Dr Shah Md Al Mukit, a registrar in the burn and plastic surgery department, mentioned that two-thirds of the patients under treatment were affected by fires started to stay warm in the winter.

Rangpur Civil Surgeon Dr Md Wajed Ali emphasised the yearly increase in burn cases during the winter season in the region.

Meanwhile, temperature was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius in Dinajpur on Sunday morning (January 14).

Confirming the matter, Asaduzzaman, an official of meteorological office in Dinajpur, said the lowest temperature was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius at 6 am in Dinajpur.

At that time, humidity was 96 percent, said the Met officer. Yesterday, temperature was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius in Dinajpur and humidity was 97 percent.
