For good governance and development, democracy is vitally necessary
Md. Zillur Rahaman :
Democracy and good governance are prerequisites for sustainable development.
Whether there is democracy in the country or not, many people have raised that question.
Many say that the country currently has an authoritarian government system.
Without good governance, development is bound to fall down and without democracy, good governance cannot be ensured.
Democracy ensures freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of work and freedom of worship.
This is the ideology of democracy and equality is the main objective of democracy. Therefore giving the value and dignity of the individual is the first thing of democracy.
The word democracy means power of the people, i.e., when the government or governance system is run on the basis of the opinion of the people, it is called democracy or democratic governance system.
America’s President Abraham Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address, “Democracy is government of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
Lack of democracy can lead to instability in any country and thus hinder development.
On the other hand, the widespread presence of corruption can hinder development.
Especially because of corruption, the benefits of economic development cannot be enjoyed fairly by the people.
But first of all we need democracy. If there is democracy, good governance will be established and if good governance is established, development will be ensured.
The current development of the country mainly consists of the contribution of expatriate income, garment workers and farmers. Good governance is very crucial to continue this trend of development.
Currently, the democracy that exists in the country has many errors and deviations.
Change is needed to establish human rights. The arrival of a third democratic party may change the situation.
Many people believe that economists have correctly identified the basic conditions for the country’s economic growth and development.
If we try to see the real picture in combination with their statements, we will see that multi-party democracy is not effective in the country.
Power is concentrated in the hands of one party and the National Parliament has become a de facto one-party institution through elections.
Through all-pervasive politicisation, every institution of the state and society including public administration, judicial system, police administration has been turned into a one party joke.
Good governance is the management of state governance on the basis of transparency, accountability and people’s participation in government activities.
Good governance refers to a desired governance system where there is a system of protection of all political freedoms including rule of law, transparency, accountability, freedom of speech, public participation in governance will be ensured i.e. democracy is established.
Apart from this, there will be protection of the rights of all irrespective of caste-religion-color, men and women, the government will be sensitive and responsible towards the needs of the people.
Good governance needs to be ensured to strengthen and strengthen democratic institutions.
But at present there is a great lack of good governance in the country. Even in the economy, good governance does not exist.
The banking sector is on the brink of bankruptcy due to defaulted loans and looting of thousands of crores of Taka.
Various problems arise in the way of establishing good governance. One of the obstacles to establishing good governance is interference with freedom of speech.
As a result, people cannot express themselves freely, which hinders the establishment of good governance.
Again, good governance is disrupted due to lack of political stability and violence. Besides, the rule of law is not effective in most of the countries.
Lack of rule of law hampers good governance. Anarchy occurs in the country due to inefficiency and mismanagement or wrong decisions of the government. As a result, good governance is disrupted.
Corruption destroys the morality of individuals and various institutions, threatens justice and equal rights, democracy and the rule of law, which hinders the establishment of good governance.
There is considerable lack of democratic practice among political parties. After coming to power, the dictatorial behavior of the leader or leaders has no chance of establishing good governance.
Democracy is a prerequisite for development and good governance. In a democracy, the people have some form of control over the government as the representatives are elected by the people.
It empowers the people and establishes good governance as the government prioritizes public opinion and public welfare. Another essential element of good governance is the rule of law.
The rule of law eliminates discrimination among citizens, protects individual liberties and civil rights. As a result, the path to good governance is smooth.
Another key feature of good governance is accountability. Accountability is the obligation to explain one’s actions to another person or authority.
Ensuring accountability at all levels will reduce corruption and with it bureaucratic complexity. Transparency is one of the key features of good governance.
Transparency is the act of doing a job in accordance with the rules and avoiding any kind of secrecy.
Efficiency is an important feature of good governance. The skills of political leaders and officials of public and private institutions are essential for establishing good governance.
The rule of law refers to the recognition that all are equal in the eyes of the law and the supremacy of the law above all else.
Rule of law means that everyone is equal before the law irrespective of religion, caste, color and minor.
Anyone who breaks the law will be brought to justice and justice will be done-that is the rule of law. A lot of developmental work has been visible in the country.
Besides corruption, dishonesty, bribery and inefficiency, the country will gain. Politics is now a form of corruption.
In the 60s, brilliant students did politics. Although they did opposing politics, they had good relations with each other.
There was respect for dissent. So it was very normal to have close friendship between two students of two groups.
Now that day is gone. Casting another party means rival foe, this attitude is very destructive. Democracy is never practiced without this attitude.
Many people think that democracy is just a funny word. Actually there is no such thing as democracy or people’s rule in the world.
In fact, only a few people manage the governance of the state in the name of the people.
If there is a vote, the right of the people is limited to voting. They do not think that people have any role in governance after elections.
According to experts democracy is a government in which everyone participates. But this participation has now become questionable.
The problem is we don’t respect dissent. We are not limiting our rights to disrespect.
Blaming each other has become our national character, not our individual character.
While criticizing the government, the opposition is unknowingly suppressing its good points.
The list of cons is getting longer. Again, while criticizing the opposition, the government is not seeing anything good for them, it is playing a hostile role.
The real development of the country is not happening due to this warlike position of each other.
