12th JS polls: AL leader killed in Munshiganj, hundreds injured across country

A supporter of the ruling Awami League was killed and over hundreds injured centering the 12th parliamentary election according country on Sunday.

Besides, about 200 people have been arrested on charge of various offences, including casting fake votes in different polling centres on the day.

The deceased has been identified as Md Zillur Rahman, a supporter of the ruling Awami League candidate Mrinal Kanti Das of Munshiganj-3 constituency.

He was hacked to death allegedly by the followers of the party’s independent candidate Md Faisal Biplab near a polling centre in Tangore area of Mirkadim municipality under Sadar upazila in Munshiganj Sunday morning.

Victim’s family alleged that the supporters of independent candidate Md Faisal, contesting with the scissors symbol, killed Zillur Rahman.

Superintendent of Police of Munshiganj district Mohammad Aslam Khan confirmed the matter to the media, saying that the incident occurred outside of the polling centre. It was unexpected.

In Madaripur, at least 10 people were injured in clashes between the followers of the Awami League and an independent candidate in Madaripur-3 constituency’s Ghatakchar area on Sunday afternoon.

Several houses were vandalized and set on fire during the clashes.
In Dhaka, at least four people, including a child and a woman, were injured in cocktails blast in front of a polling centre in the old Dhaka’s Hazaribagh area on Sunday (January 7).

The incident took place in front of Jameya Anwarul Ulum Madrasa around 12:00pm.

In Faridpur, two persons were injured during a clash between the supporters of Awami League candidate Kazi Zafarullah and independent candidate Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury known as Nixon Chowdhury of Faridpur-4 at Sheikhpura Government Primary School polling centre in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur on Sunday afternoon.

In Rajshahi, at least two persons were injured during a clash between the supporters of the AL and independent candidates of Rajshahi-6 (Bagha-Charghat) constituency on Sunday morning.
