University teachers reject 12th national election
DU Correspondent :
The University Teacher’s Network, an organization of university teachers, gave an open letter to the countrymen on Friday to reject the national 12th national election scheduled to be held on January 7.
Expressing concern and apprehension, the letter said that the government should solve the crisis in a democratic way.
Professor Dr Gitiara Nasreen of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University (DU) sent this open letter on behalf of the University Teacher’s Network.
Highlighting various songoning contexts and situations in the open letter, the Teachers Network said, “The whole
country submerged in a political crisis today. We hoped that, learning from past experience, efforts to hold a free, competitive and impartial election based on consensus would be shared by all.”
The Teacher’s Network said, “We one disappointed as the election which is going to be held on January 7, will not be able to give the people anything but the renewal of absolute power of the current ruling power. “
The letter also said that despite the presence of a strong opposition party being one of the prerequisites of parliamentary governance, it seems that it will be difficult to form a ‘dummy’ opposition party as before.
Because many political parties, including BNP, have boycotted the election due to the absence of free election environment.
“The parties participating in the 12th national elections with the government party or with the support of the government party aren’t active political organizations but only by name.
Observing the situation, it seems that the Election Commission has registered these parties in a planned manner keeping in mind the 12th national elections,” the Teacher’s Network added in this open letter.
Mentioning the various current scenarios, the Teacher’s Network said that unfortunately, on January 7 we are going to see another election as unacceptable as 2014 and 2018, and it is easy to imagine what the outcome of the election will be.”
“Considering the state of the country’s economy and the position of Bangladesh in the geopolitical framework, such a questionable election can lead the future of the country to deep darkness,” the University Teacher’s Network added.
