Biting cold shatters lives in northern region

Staff Reporter :
With the sliding of mercury down, people in almost all the districts are experiencing biting cold and dense fogs, disrupting the daily activities and hampering flight schedule, smooth vehicular movement and ferry plying.

The northern districts like Panchagarh, Takurgaon, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Sylhet and Sunamganj have reported dense fog from late night to early morning and severity of the biting cold.

People of those areas said that, the sun was not much visible on Wednesday, prompting the poor people, day labourers and farmers to suffer the worst early in the morning.

According to the Meteorological Department, the lowest temperature was recorded 7.4 degree Celsius in Tentulia on Wednesday, followed by Dinajpur 9.5 degree Celsius while the maximum temperature was recorded in Cox’s Bazar 28 degree Celsius.

The Met office forecast that moderate to dense fog may occur over the country during midnight to morning and it may continue till noon at places over the country on Thursday. The weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country.

However, the country may experience the chances of light rain at one or two places over Rajshahi division on Friday, the Met office said.

Following the chilling weather, the selling of warm clothes has increased across the country including the capital markets and footpath shops.

Seizing the opportunity of the cold weather, the sellers and vendors are selling warm clothes at some higher prices, putting extra pressure on the purses of the ordinary people as the financial condition is already overburdened by the high prices of daily commodities including vegetables.

With the fall of temperature, the old people and babies are being affected by cold-weather related diseases like flu and coughing.
Hospitals and clinics in a number of districts reported that the number of cold related patients, especially old people and children are increasing.

Naogaon General Hospital and Upazila Health Complex sources said that the number of diarrhea and cold related patients have increased in the last one week. Some 706 patients were admitted in the last one week while this number was 571 two weeks ago.

Health official of Naogaon Civil Surgeon office Ashish Kumer Sarkar said that, the children are the worst sufferer in the severe cold and suffering from diarrhea and breathing problems.

Meanwhile, the dense fog has also disrupted the flight schedule in Syedpur Airport, but no flight was cancelled.

On the other hand, five airplanes could not touch down at Shahjalal International Airport due to dense fog and landed in Sylhet Osmani International Airport on Tuesday. Later, these planes left for Dhaka with the improvement of weather.
