‘Mediation centers in districts urgent to resolve case backlog’

Staff Reporter  :
Justice Ahmed Sohel, a judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, on Friday urged the government to set up mediation centers in every district of the country to resolve the case backlog.

He further said, “Mediation process should be popularized to resolve case backlog. That is why mediation centers need to be set up in every district. Apart from this, establishment of an International Mediation Academy in Bangladesh to conduct research on mediation is the need of time.”

He said this at the inauguration ceremony of a two-day training workshop on ‘Mediation and Willpower’ organized at Hotel Purbani in the capital. Bangladesh International Mediation Society (BIMS) organized the workshop.

Justice Ahmed Sohel further said, “The judiciary of the country has a burden of 40 lakh pending cases. Mediation process can be the only alternative to get relief from this burden.

Accredited mediators have to play their proper role in creating a mediation-friendly society. Every mediator must be a leader. Mediation is the best method for quick resolution of cases or disputes.”

BIMS’ Chairman and Senior SC lawyer Samarendra Nath Goswami presided over the meeting. He said, “Accredited mediators need to mobilize their willpower to make mediation successful. A mediator should always play a role in keeping people free from conflicts.”

Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Md Momtazuddin Fakir, Nepal Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate Hari Shankar Niraula, International Coordinator of BIMS Vijay Bharatiya, among others, attended the inauguration ceremony. A total of 41 accredited mediators participated in the workshop.
