Staff Reporter  :
Another slot of 136 irregular Bangladeshis migrants returned home from a detention centre in Tripoli, Libya on Thursday.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has successfully repatriated an additional 136 irregular Bangladeshi migrants from the detention center in Benghazi, Libya, on Thursday, Foreign Ministry said.

Upon their arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IOM provided each repatriated individual with a cash assistance of Tk 6,058 and some food items as a support package.

Previously, on November 28, a total of 143 individuals were rescued from a detention center in Tripoli, followed by another 110 on November 30, and 145 on December 6 from
the Benghazi detention center.

Director (Welfare) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mustafa Jamil Khan, personally greeted the returning Bangladeshis at the airport.

He urged them to share their harrowing experiences in Libya with their neighbours and relatives upon returning home.

Mustafa Jamil emphasised the importance of raising awareness so that others do not fall victim to illegal migration and trafficking in the future.

It is noteworthy that the joint efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, and the collaboration with the IOM have facilitated the ongoing process of repatriating Bangladeshi nationals who were stranded or detained in Libya.

The process of returning more irregular Bangladeshi migrants from Libya to Bangladesh is expected to continue in the near future.

In the months of November and December 2023, a total of 534 Bangladeshi nationals were repatriated on four chartered flights arranged by the IOM.
