BD film ‘Sankota Dulchhe’ wins award in Shanghai

Bangladeshi film ‘Sankota Dulche (The Blind Girl and an Elephant)’ has won
an award at the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival. The English name of the film is ‘The Blind Girl and an Elephant’.

Samiul Karim Shuptak has been selected as the best in the cinematography category in the Asian New Talent competition section of the festival.

Director Ishtiyak Ahmad Jihad and producer Manoj Pramanik accepted the award on his behalf on June 20, said a press release.

China’s ‘Her First Test’ was named the best film in the Asian New Talent Competition category.

Ma Fufu won the best actress award for the same film. Sompot Chidgasornpongse won the best director award for Thailand’s ‘Nine Temples to Heaven’ and Sompop Songkhampol won the best actor award.

‘Sankota Dulchhe’ is the first film of director Ishtiyak Ahmad Jihad.

This is also the first full-length film of Manoj Pramanik as a producer.

The film is produced by German production company Mogader Films along with Manoj’s production company Manpachitra.

German producer Christoph Thoke has worked as an associate producer.

In addition, internationally renowned film critic, producer and programmer Darcy Paquette is the consulting producer. Director and producer Fazle Hasan Shishir is the co-producer.

The film follows the story of three women in rural Bangladesh who dream of freedom from the shackles of superstition, patriarchal society, and social oppression.

Through many unexpected and painful turns in life, a blind young woman is finally able to continue her journey on the path of her dreams and comes face to face with a mysterious elephant.

The movie, shot entirely in black and white, presents the questions of women’s lives, beliefs, social control and individual freedom in a poetic film language based on the reality of rural Bangladesh.

Sanzida Akter Swarna, Tahmida Rahman Touhida, Sumaiya Haque, Ashok Bepari, Sabiha Zaman, Pankaj Majumder, Munsif Mim, Nishat Tasnim, etc played various roles.
