BNP-police clash injure 50 in Habiganj

At least 50 people, including six members of police and two journalists, were injured in a clash between police and BNP men during the party’s human chain programme in Sayestanagar area of Habiganj on Sunday.

The clash occurred around 12:30pm when police lobbed tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse the BNP men.

Ajay Chandra Dev, Officer-in-charge of Habiganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed the matter to the media saying that at least six members of police were injured when BNP activists attacked them.

However, “Police arrested one person in this connection. He is being interrogated”, the OC added.

In this regards, Kamal Uddin Selim, Joint Convener of district unit BNP, said the party leaders and activists and its associate bodies were holding a peacefulhuman chain programme in front of the BNP office in the morning.

“The clash broke out when the police attacked us as we were wrapping up our programme,” he added.

In the clash, two journalists, My TV correspondent Niranjan Goswami and Desh TV correspondent Amir Hamza, were seriously injured.

They were treated in Habiganj and later sent to Dhaka.

Meanwhile, Ajay Chandra Deb, Officer-in-Charge of Habiganj Police Station, said six policemen were injured in the clash.

Police also detained a man from the spot.

The situation is now under control, said the OC.
