12th JS Elections: AL nominates candidates in 298 seats

Awami League revealed the names of candidates for 298 out of 300 constituencies for the 12th national election on Sunday.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names of its nominated candidates at a press briefing held at the party’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue.

Meanwhile the party kept the names of candidates for Kushtia-2 and Narayanganj-5 seats vacant saying it will be revealed later.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod) faction president Hasanul Haque Inu and Jatiya Party leader Selim Osman are lawmakers from Kushtia-2 and Narayanganj-5 constituencies respectively.

AL President Sheikh Hasina has been nominated for Gopalganj-3 constituency while the party general secretary Obaidul Quader has been nominated for Noakhali-5 constituency, according to the announcement.

Earlier, Awami League held a views-exchange meeting with the nomination aspirants.

The meeting was held at Ganabhaban at 10am with Awami League and its parliamentary nomination board President Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Among the party’s central leaders, Tofail Ahmed, Amir Hossain Amu, Matia Chowdhury, Obaidul Quader, Hasan Mahmud and Dipu Moni got the nomination.

Among the new faces, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan got nomination for Magura-1 and actor Ferdous Ahmed for Dhaka-10 constituencies.

Meanwhile, Star cricketer, former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team –Mashrafe Bin Mortaza also has got AL’s nomination again for his seat of Narail-2 constituency.

The ruling Awami League has sold a total of 3362 nomination forms for the boat symbol among the nomination seekers of the national elections slated for January 7.

Obaidul Quader said nominated candidates will vie for the next general polls with the symbol of ‘Boat’.

A total of 72 current MPs of the ruling party failed to get nominations from the party to contests the next polls.

Former LGRD minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain (Faridpur-3), former state minister for information Murad Hasan (Jamalpur-4), former police chief Nur Mohammad (Kishoreganj-2), Enamul Haque (Rajshahi-4), Haji Mohammad Selim (Dhaka-7) and former home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir (Chandpur-1) who were elected lawmakers in 2018 general election were among those dropped from the list of the party candidates.

The 12th Jatiya Sangsad election was announced for 7 January. The Election Commission made the announcement on 15 November amid staunch objections from the opposition parties, including the main opposition party-BNP- and Jamaat-e-Islami.
The schedule was declared amid hartals and blockades being observed since 28 October by the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, among other parties.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, announced the schedule during a live telecast from the Nirbachan Bhaban, invited all parties to participate in the polls as ‘there is an environment of holding free, fair and participatory election’.
