Closing workshop on spice crops held in BARI

The concluding workshop of the Spice Research Center of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) on “Strengthening Spice Crops Research in Bangladesh” was held at Kazi Badruddoza Auditorium on Saturday.
Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Dr. Shaikh Mohammad Bokhtiar Attended the event as chief guest and inaugurated the workshop. BARI Director General Dr. Debasish Sarker presided over the session while Joint Secretary (Research), Ministry of Agriculture Rehena Yachmin, Director (Research) Dr. Md. Abdullah Yousuf Akhond; Director (Support and Survices) Dr. Ferdouse Islam; Director (Planning and Evaluation) Dr. Dilwar Ahmed Choodhury and Director (Training and Communication) Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam were present as special guests in the workshop.
Principal Scientific Officer and Project Director Dr. Shailendra Nath Mozumder presented the Keynote Paper in the event. The project director said, research activities were conducted for the development of spices in 194 Upazilas under the project. Where 17 improved varieties of spices inovated, 75 technologies developed and 334 germplasm were collected .This will play a special role in filling the overall shortage of spices in the country.
The chief guest said in his speech, the scientists of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute are doing relentless research to meet the shortage of spice crops in the country. As a result of which many promising new varieties and technologies have been invented showing hope in meeting the demand of our spice crop.
BARI DG said despite many difficulties, if the spice crop varieties developed by BARI are successfully implemented at the farmer level, we will be able to meet our own needs by reducing our import dependence. The country’s economy will save foreign exchange.
Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Md. Zulfikar Haider Pradhan welcomed the event. A number of senior officers from Ministry of Agriculture, BARI, BARC, DAE, BADC, farmer representatives, NGO representatives and journalists from print and electronic media were participated at the workshop.
