Unrest in Ashulia: 3000 RMG workers sued in 12 cases

A total of 3,000 readymade garment (RMG) workers were sued in 12 cases filed in connection with the attacks and vandalism in various factories in Ashulia, Dhaka during agitations seeking a minimum monthly wage of Tk 23,000.

Md Shahidul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) of Dhaka District Police, confirmed the matter to the media on Sunday.

Five people have been arrested so far in these cases, he added.

Till now, a total of 12 cases have been registered with Ashulia police station in connection with attacks and vandalism in various garment factories, said Shahidul Islam.

He also said that in one case, 16 people have been named, and the rest are unknown accused.

There are about 2,500 to 3,000 unidentified accused in these cases, he added.

So far a total of 130 garment factories have been closed in Savar, Ashulia, and Dhamrai industrial areas for an indefinite period amid the ongoing demonstrations of the apparel workers for increasing their minimum wages.
