Six more die of dengue

Staff Reporter :
The number of deaths caused by dengue this year in Bangladesh has reached at least 1466 with six new fatalities reported by hospitals across the country in the latest daily count.

Besides, at least 1,512 dengue patients were hospitalized in the 24-hour period till Saturday morning, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The data showed nearly 2,90,084 people were infected with dengue this year, making this the deadliest year since the first recorded epidemic in 2000.

According to DGHS data, 6,373 dengue patients were undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country.

A total of 2,82,245 patients have so far been released from hospitals across the country this year.

According to DGHS data, a total of 62,382 patients were hospitalized last year while the total number of deaths was 281.

Meanwhile, after a record 79,598 dengue cases and 396 deaths in September amid the worst outbreak of the disease, 67,769 cases and 359 deaths were reported in October. The number of cases in August was 71,976, with 342 deaths.

Experts have blamed a prolonged monsoon and rising temperature, along with a lack of effective measures to kill the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the known carrier of the virus, for the outbreak.
