Environment prevails for schedule declaration: EC Secy

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam on Wednesday said that an environment has prevailed similar to the declaration of the election schedule. The EC is determined to hold the elections within the scheduled time.

EC Secretary Md. Jahangir said these in response to a query from reporters in his office at the EC Secretariat on Wednesday (November 8).

The EC Secretary said the 12th National Assembly (Jatiya Sangsad – JS) election is imminent. According to the constitution, the election should be organized within the stipulated time. As per custom, the EC had a courtesy call on the President before announcing the schedule.

He said that the meeting is scheduled for Thursday (November 9). In the meeting, the President will be apprised of all developments related to the election preparations. The commission will listen to the advice and instructions of the President regarding the preparation. The jurisdiction to declare the schedule rests entirely with the EC. The commission meeting has not been held yet.

The EC Secretary said that the Commission has repeatedly said the schedule can be announced any time in the second half of November. As per that, the election can be held in the last week of December or the first week of January.

Regarding the deployment of law and order forces in the election, the Secretary said that the Ministry of Home Affairs will issue a circular in due course. In the meantime, the law and order meeting has been asked to take necessary measures.
