ICC Men’s CWC: Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by three wickets

Chasing a target of 280 set by Sri Lanka, Tigers secured the goal in 41.1 overs after lossing seven wickets in the 38th match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup (CWC) played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel.

Najmul Hossain Shanto and Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan played a vital role in win as they made 90 and 82 respectively.

Angelo Mathews broke a 169-run stand between them. Sri Lankan pacers Dilshan Madushanka took three wickets while Maheesh Theekshana and Mathew claimed two wickets each.

Earlier, Asalanka played a gutsy knock of 108 runs to power Sri Lanka to 279 against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and sent Sri Lanka into bat first in their eighth game, predicting that bowling at night will be difficult due to excessive dew. Sri Lanka scored 279 runs with loss of 10 wickets in 49.3 overs.

Bangladesh began the World Cup with a six-wicket victory over Afghanistan but then lost six matches on the trot to be eliminated from the semifinal race. But still this game against Sri Lanka is crucial to keep their ICC Champions Trophy hopes alive.

Bangladesh found an early breakthrough when Mushfiqur Rahim made a sensational catch behind the wicket to dismiss Kusal Perera in the first over.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib removed Pathum Nissanka, who tried to take a strong start but fell for 41 off 36.

Charith Asalanka and Sadeera Samarwickrama paired up to put scores on the board but things turned dramatically Bangladesh’s way in the 25th over when Samarawickrama was dismissed following which Angelo Mathews was timed out for taking too much time to walk in.

Asalanka smashed 108 while Dhananjaya de Silva made 34 and Maheesh Theekshana scored 22 in final overs to boost the total. However, the team was bowled out for 279 in 49.3 overs.
