4-day remand for BNP leader Omar, Altaf sent to jail

Staff Reporter  :
A court in Dhaka has given the police four days to question BNP Vice Chairman Shahjahan Omar in custody in a case filed over a bus being set ablaze in the New Market area of Dhaka and BNP Vice Chairman Air Vice Marshal (retd) Altaf Hossain Choudhury to be sent to jail in a case filed over vandalism of the chief justice’s home during a clash between party men and police on October 28.

Inspector Sairul Islam of the Detective Branch, the investigating officer of the case, presented the senior BNP leader before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rashidul Alam, requesting he be put on a seven-day remand, while Omar’s legal counsel sought bail.

After hearing the arguments from both sides, the court placed Omar on a four-day remand.

A Dhaka court has ordered Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Sheikh Sadi on Sunday rejected Altaf Hossain Choudhury’s bail petition and passed the order after Ramna police station Inspector Abu Ansar, also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court.

Earlier in the day, the Rapid Action Batallion detained him in Uttara Dhaka.

According to law enforcement, before the start of the BNP’s rally on October 28, the party’s leaders and activists launched an attack on the chief justice’s residence.
