AG condemns attack on CJ’s residence, pro-BNP lawyers support of hartal

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin on Sunday denounced the attack on the official residence of Chief Justice (CJ) during the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s grand rally in Naya Paltan area in Dhaka.

In a press briefing at his office, the Attorney General said, “Utter contempt and disrespect for the entire judiciary and the haven of justice for people have been shown by the attack on the Chief Justice’s residence. Such kind of activities amounts to treason.

The dignity of the judiciary has been questioned to the outside world, which I think is a kind of threat to the judiciary.”

He blamed BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists for this attack and called upon the concerned departments of the government to take appropriate legal actions against them.

Meanwhile, leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) held a rally denouncing the attack on the official residence of Chief Justice.

SCBA President Md Momtazuddin Fakir, Secretary Md Abdun Nur Dulal, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, Additional Attorney Generals Sheikh Mohammad Morhsed and Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury, among others, gave speeches at the rally.

Pro-BNP lawyers also staged a protest on the Supreme Court premises on Sunday condemning the arrest of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from his home.

At that time they also extended their support for the hartal called by the party.

Earlier in the day, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was detained by law enforcement forces, his wife Rahat Ara Begum said.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, Advocate Shah Ahmed Badol, Advocate Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan, Advocate Abed Raza, Advocate Yousuf Ali, among others, gave speeches in the protest program.

Barrister Kazal said, “The government is conspiring again to hold an election depriving the people of their voting rights.

As part of that conspiracy, they are arresting senior leaders of the BNP including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

We want unconditional release of BNP Secretary General and withdrawal of all cases filed on false allegations against BNP leaders and activists.”
