RMG workers face, malnutrition for poor buying capacity

Speakers at a discussion on Friday said that most of the ready-made garment workers of the country were facing anaemia and nutrition crisis for their poor buying capacity and unhealthy cooking.

The Association for Community Empowerment in association with the Auchan Foundation organised the discussion followed by the inauguration of a kitchen in the labour-intensive Hemayetpur area, on the outskirts of the capital, reports media.

Speakers said that 77 per cent of total workers were facing anaemia because of nutrition crisis in their intake of daily food.

To reduce the nutrition crisis, a community kitchen was opened to train 500 garment workers or their family members free of cost to cook healthy meals so that their access to nutritious foods could be increased.

ACE chairperson Parveen Sultana Huda said that the nutritive value of food depended not only upon how much it was consumed or what they were eating, but also upon how it was prepared.

Many vitamins and minerals in food are sensitive to heat, water, and air exposure, she said, adding that the loss of nutrients increases with longer cooking times and higher temperature.
