Road mishaps leave 14 people dead in 4 districts

At least fourteen people were dead in separate road mishaps in Mymensingh, Manikganj, Dinajpur and Chattogram districts on Wednesday In Mymensingh, at least six workers of a garment factory were dead and eight others were injured when a speeding bus ran them over while they were waiting to board another bus on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Trishal upazila, under Mymensingh district, on Wednesday.

Four of the deceased were identified as Jesmine Akter, 35; Sirajul Islam, 40; Sohel Mia, 28; and Liton Mia, 30, of Sadar upazila while the identities of two others could not be known immediately, reports UNB.

Quoting locals, Main Uddin, officer-in-charge of Trishal Police Station, said a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘SS Travellers’ from Sherpur made a sudden stop at Chelerghat around 7:30 am today, as one of its tyres got punctured.

Passengers of the bus got off and were waiting on the highway for another bus. Around 8 am, a bus arrived at the spot, and they tried to board it.

At this time, another bus, speeding on the highway, hit the people standing on the road — leaving three dead on the spot and 11 injured.

Of the injured, three died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway remained halted for some time after the accident. In Manikganj, four people were dead and six were injured as a human hauler plunged into a roadside pond after being hit by a bus on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Sadar upazila of Manikganj district on Wednesday.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The accident occurred at 8:30 am at Bhatbaur when the human hauler plunged into a roadside pond after being hit by a bus while picking and dropping off passengers — leaving four dead on the spot, said Abdur Rauf, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

The six injured passengers were taken to a local hospital from where two were moved to Manikganj District Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, as their condition were stated to be critical.

Divers from the local fire service station rushed to the spot and recovered the deadbodies.

In Dinajpur, a woman and a five-year-old boy died after a truck hit a motorcycle they were on at Bochaganj Upazila of Dinajpur on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Champa Rani Roy (26) of Jalgaon village of the upazila and her nephew Joy Chandra Roy (5) of the same village.
Witnesses said the aunt and nephew died while returning home on the motorcycle after shopping in the market.

A doctor declared them dead when they were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, said Bochaganj Police Station Sub-inspector Raja Mia.

Bochaganj Police Station in-charge Abu Bakar Siddique Rasel said they detained truck driver Aminul Islam and seized the truck.

In Chattogram, two women died in separate road accidents in Chandanaish upazila and in Anwara Upazila of Chattogram on Wednesday morning.

One of the deceased was a 24-25-year-old unidentified woman in Anwara Upazila and another deceased was identified as Diluara Begum (45), a daily wage earner from Ward-1 of Dohazari Municipality of Chandanaish upazila, said police.

The unidentified woman died when a vehicle hit her at Jheori Mazar Gate of Anwara Upazila, said Sohel Mahmud, officer-in-Charge of Anwara Police Station.

Meanwhile, in another incident in Dohazari area Ward-1, Diluara Begum died when a leguna lost control and rammed the bathroom on the side of the road, said Khan Mohammad Erfan, officer-in-charge of Dohazari Highway Police Station.
