BNP’s tougher agitation awaits EC poll schedule

The main opposition party-BNP have made a plan to start second phase of its agitation programmes, which it said will be tougher, after the election commission’s announcement of the schedule of the next general election.

Party insiders said the BNP high-command has drafted the tougher agitation plan including strike and blockades to press home of its final desire of holding the next polls after resignation of the Awami League regime and holding the same under a neutral caretaker government.

Senior leaders of the party said they were ready to start the strict movement after ending its previously announced 17 day programmes which ended on Thursday.

But the party announced further rallies and peaceful prgrammes from October 9 to 12.

In its road march in Chattogram, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced its new programmes- rallies in all cities and district headquarters on October 9, student convention in Dhaka on October 12, hunger strike in Dhaka and other cities, youth rally in Dhaka on October 16 and rally in Dhaka on October 18.

The fresh programmes will revealed on the date, Mirza Fakhrul said.

However, the high-ups, finally decided to wait several more days as the EC plans to announce the schedule of the next general election.

The party leaders said that the situation normally demands a fresh course of action from the opposition party after announcing the polls schedule as it is clearly against the demand and desires of the countrymen.

Besides, the party high-ups also are observing the government’s actions regarding BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s medical treatment abroad as physicians involved with the treatment of the former Prime Minister suggested taking her abroad immediately for necessary medicare.

Apart from these, the BNP also delaying its movement for the Hindus large religious event Durga puja which is scheduled to be held on October 20.

When contacted, BNP Standing Committee Member Goyeswar Chandra Roy told The New Nation, “Tougher movement must take place in time as the people of the country do not want this government any more.

So, as its duty, the BNP must announce stern agitation programme soon.”

Goyeswar Roy, one of the policy makers of the party, said also that the people are with the BNP so the next course of action must to have be decisive.

Contacted, Barkatullah Bulu, BNP Vice-Chairman told The New Nation, “As part of warm-up exercise, the BNP men have orgainsed number of peaceful programmes including road marches and rallies in almost every part of the country.”
