Student sufferings at DU: Assurances go in vain
Md Moniruzzaman :
On several occasions in the past, the Dhaka University (DU) administration had assured the students of stopping harassment on the campus, but they have completely fail to keep to the promises even after passing a year.
The DU Vice-Chancellor on September 2022 assured the students of stopping harassment at the registrar building following protests from them.
At that time the VC said, ‘From now, no student will have to go to the registrar’s building for official work’.
But even after passing one year, the harassment is still continuing thanks to failures of the administration.
When contact DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman asked the students to remain associated with the department and contact the hall office and the department in the event of necessity.
“We applied two times for adjustment of our improvement result which published in 2021 but it could not adjust.
Later, we forced to go to the registrar building where we have been informed that there is a lack of combination with department,” Shahriar Azam, a student of Mass Communication and Journalism Department said.
“We have been asked to apply again. We don’t know whether we get any feedback this time too or not.” Azam added.
On this issue, the DU VC said, “There are still many things left.
We need at least two years to digitalize the university.
There are many things that cannot be possible as we have some limitations. The universities of the developed country also face these problems.”
The DU installed Security and Surveillance Box at the entrance point of the university to meet the students demand and it also inaugurated in Jun this year but the administration could not still recruit personnel.
As a result, the students still have to face traffic congestion.
At the beginning of August this year, the students of the Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall staged protest to meet the intensifying accommodation crisis of this hall.
The DU VC assured the students of solving the problem. But the students alleged that they could not see any step so far.
Besides, the DU administration assured the students of seven affiliated colleges of solving their problems several times in the past in face to street movements.
But all the problems still remained unresolved to the frustration of the agitating students.
“We have formed a committee to look into this issue.
They are scrutinizing the matter,” Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman said.
The DU authorities fixed rickshaw fare on may this year for the university area following the demands of students while Chhatra League provided uniform with its name written on the back to rickshaw pullers.
But the authority could not regulate the fare and thereby the sufferance still continues.
