Bangladeshi scientist revolutionizing microbiology

In a quiet corner of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), a name has been making waves in the world of microbiology and hygiene.
Prof Dr. S. M. Lutful Kabir’s prolific research contributions extend to more than 100 research and review articles were published in national and international journals.
He also serves as an editorial board member and peer reviewer for esteemed international journals.
His dedication to the scientific community is further evident through his active participation in numerous national and international conferences.
Since March 2015, Kabir has been donning the hat of a Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, BAU, while concurrently serving as a provost of Shaheed Shamsul Haque Hall, BAU.
His contributions extend to his roles as the associate director of the transport section at BAU and as the head of the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene.
Kabir’s multifaceted career includes political and organizational involvement.
He previously served as an elected member of the executive committee of the Teachers’ Association at BAU.
Currently, he presides as the president of the Narsingdi Zila Chhatrakalyan Somittee at BAU and leads Canvas, a painting organization located within the Bangladesh Agricultural University campus.
Beyond academia, Kabir’s passion for scientific dissemination led him to establish Ebu Press Ltd, a non-profit scientific publisher based in Bangladesh.
He holds memberships in numerous professional organizations, including the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), and is a lifelong member of several Bangladeshi associations related to veterinary science, microbiology, and biosecurity.
Kabir’s groundbreaking work has not gone unnoticed.
He has received prestigious accolades, including the Best Scientist Award in 2018, 2022, and 2023 from the Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System, recognizing his outstanding research quality, impressive h-index, and significant contributions to scientific research publications.
In 2021, he was honored with the Best Publication Award in the home research category by the Bangladesh Agricultural University Teachers’ Association.
Kabir’s research journey has covered a wide spectrum, from pioneering probiotics in the poultry industry to developing accurate methods for Campylobacter species identification.
His focus on animal, food, and environmental microbiology has unearthed vital insights into antibiotic resistance in both animals and humans, with a specific emphasis on the application of probiotics in Bangladesh.
His most recent innovation, a cost-effective and user-friendly laboratory tool for microbe detection, showcases his commitment to advancing scientific knowledge with limited resources.
With an impressive publication record, including 124 scientific articles, 25 conference papers, 143 conference proceedings, 1 book, and 3 book chapters published by international publishers, Kabir’s contributions to the field of microbiology are undeniable.
Additionally, he has submitted 327 sequence data for NCBI accession.
Professor Dr. S. M. Lutful Kabir is born on January 7, 1979, in Sharifpur village, Narsingdi District, Bangladesh, is rewriting the script for scientific innovation in a developing nation.
With humble beginnings at Bashir Uddin Adarsha High School in Dhaka, Kabir’s academic journey soon took a stellar turn.
Graduating with top honors from Dhaka College and earning his DVM degree from BAU in 2002, he set his sights on a career in microbiology.
Joining BAU as a lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene in 2002, Kabir’s passion for research saw him excel, earning a gold medal for his MS degree in Vet Public Health and Food Hygiene in 2003.
His academic prowess led to his promotion as Assistant Professor in June 2005.
The turning point in Kabir’s career came when he pursued his PhD degree in Veterinary Science at Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, culminating in 2011.
