BNP leader Aman files appeal against his sentence

BNP leader Aman Ullah Aman on Tuesday filed an appeal petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against his 13 years’ jail sentence in a corruption case.

His lawyer Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan submitted the petition with the Appellate Division.

On September 10 a Dhaka Court sent Aman to jail in the case rejecting his bail petition in the graft case.

Aman’s wife Sabera was also sent to jail on September 3 after her surrender before the same court in the same case, in which she was sentenced to three years in jail.

However, the chamber judge of the Supreme Court on September 5 granted her bail till January 15, 2024.

The Anti-Corruption Commission on March 6 of 2007 filed a case against the couple for acquiring illegal wealth.

On August 7, the 281-page judgment was published by the High Court Bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat. Aman and his wife were asked to surrender before the judicial (lower) court within 15 days of receipt of the copy of the judgment.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on March 6, 2007, filed the case with Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka against Aman Ullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman.

On June 21, 2007, a court sentenced Aman to 13 years imprisonment and his wife to three years in jail in the case.

Later, they filed an appeal challenging the lower court order. On August 16, 2010, the High Court acquitted them.

The Anti-Corruption Commission submitted a petition to the Appellate Division challenging the High Court order.

On May 26, 2014, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court asked the High Court to re-hear the petition.

On May 30, the High Court upheld the lower court verdict that had sentenced Aman to 13 years in jail and his wife Sabera to three years. It also asked them to surrender before the court within 15 days of getting the text of the verdict.
