Obaidul Hassan becomes country’s 24th Chief Justice

Justice Obaidul Hassan, the senior most judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, has been appointed the new Chief Justice (CJ) of the country.

The President has appointed Justice Obaidul Hassan, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Bangladesh in line with the article 95(1) of the Constitution, said a notification issued by the Law Ministry on Tuesday.

The appointment will come into effect after taking his oath, also read the notification issued by Law Secretary Md Golam Sarwar.

The incumbent Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique will retire on September 25, as he will complete his 67 years, the age boundary of a Supreme Court judge, on that day.

Justice Obaidul Hassan will be the 24th Chief Justice of the country.

Justice Obaidul Hassan was born on January 11 in 1959.

He obtained BSS (Hons) and MSS (Economics) and LLB from University of Dhaka.

He was enrolled as an Advocate of the District Court, the High Court Division and the Appellate Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court on March 18 in 1986, October 18 in 1988 and August 15 in 2005 respectively.

He was elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court Division on June 30 in 2009 and appointed Judge of the same division on June 6 in 2011.

He worked as Member and Chairman respectively of the International Crimes Tribunal (BD)-2 during March 23 in 2012 to December 12 in 2012 and December 13 in 2012 to September 15 in 2015.

He delivered as many as 11 (Eleven) Judgments with fellow brothers in the International Crimes Tribunal(BD)-2.

He was elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on September 3 in 2020.

He delivered numerous Judgments including Judgment on Arpita Sompotti Ain, and appointment of Judges to the High Court Division.

He participated in an international conference held in Hong Kong (1991) and attended a training program namely “Judicial Governance Program” held in Singapore in July 2015.

He attended an International Conference on “International Crimes/State Crimes” held in Buenos Ayres, Argentina, in August 2015. He also participated in a view exchange program with the Judges of International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in Hague, Netherlands, in August 2015.

He visited China, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Dubai and Turkey.
