AL govt makes BD battleground of big powers: BNP

Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the Awami League government is letting big powers make Bangladesh a battleground.

“Bangladesh is going to be used as a battleground of the big powers for establishing their supremacy only because of the Awami League government’s imprudent diplomacy,” Mirza Fakhrul said while addressing a rally brought by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal in front of BNP’s Naya Paltan central office marking 45th founding anniversary of the organization.

BNP founder Ziaur Rahman formed Mohila Dal, the female wing of the party, on September 9, 1978.

Mirza Fakhrul also expressed anxiety over Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s comment that the US and its allies are trying to promote their interests in South Asia region by using the Indo-Pacific strategy with the goal to counter China and Isolate Russia.

“The speech of the Russian foreign minister after arriving here has clearly manifested that Bangladesh is going to be used as a field in the sphere of influence of the big powers in their struggle for superiority.

It’s very alarming for our country,” Mirza Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader alleged that the Awami League government is completely responsible for creating such a situation and inviting danger for the nation.

“They (govt) are making irresponsible statements and conducting their diplomacy imprudently to push Bangladesh to such a dire situation.”

Lavrov arrived in Dhaka on Thursday evening on a two-day visit.

At a press briefing later, Lavrov said Moscow would prevent any attempt to establish dictates and interference by the US and its allies in this region.

It was the first visit by a Russian foreign minister since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

BNP Secretary General urged the leaders and workers of the Mohila Dal to play an important role in making the current movement for the restoration of democracy a success with their participation in street programmes.

“I ask to all you on this foundation anniversary, you have to take an oath that we would establish people’s government ousting the existing one at any cost and hold the (next) election under a neutral non-partisan government,” he told the Mahila Dal leaders and activists.

Mirza Fakrul said they want to realize their one-point demand peacefully without any violence and chaos.

He said the BNP’s aim is not to create any chaos but is to create a democratic environment suitable for holding free, fair, and credible polls.

He said the fall of the current regime is inevitable as people are taking to the streets to establish a democratic and elected government.

“AL government is not elected by the people.

The past two elections conducted by this unelected government also were not free, fair and participatory, so the people would not allow AL to do so anymore,” he said.
