Eco-friendly cement production is a welcome initiative
Major manufacturers of important constructional material — cement — have initiated to replace their old grinding technology with newer one, according to media reports.
This is indeed a welcome initiative. Hitherto, nine cement companies used old and cheaper Traditional Ball Mill (TBM) technology to manufacture cement but now they are eyeing Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) and Roller Press (RP) technologies, which are touted to be more environment-friendly and energy efficient.
These nine units of 37 active cement companies of the country will be able to produce cement, adhering to environmental compliance.
They won’t pollute the environment and cause health hazards to both the workers in the factory and the loaders and unloaders of raw materials of cement and finished goods.
Earlier, readymade garments (RMG) started going green in Bangladesh and now the major cement manufacturers are toeing their lines and the rest will follow suit.
Bangladesh is currently leading the globe when it comes to the question of green RMG factories as 173 green factories have got accreditation from US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
Still many industries like coal-fired power plant, shipbuilding companies, and brick kilns are facing backlash from environmentalists for showing nonchalant attitude towards their hapless labourers and the environment around them.
We hope more and more industries and firms will go green, keeping the slowly creeping modern slavery at bay and safeguarding the interest of the labourers.
Now the labourers and shippers will be equally safe and happy without dresses covered with grime, dirt, fly ash, cement, etc.
The factories will contain their carbon footprint, watching out for climate change and containing their emission because the world doesn’t afford any more glacier melted.
We are also appalled to imagine that more and more lands are going under the water due to sea-level rise, substantially stoking the number of climate migrants across the world.
The old practices that are harmful must be replaced with the new ones that are environment-friendly and safe for human health.
