Teesta overflowing in Lalmonirhat charlands

The water in the river Teesta is flowing over the danger mark at Dalia point due to upstream hill slopes as heavy rainfall occurred in the last 24 hours.

As a result, the lower area of Lalmonirhat on the left bank of Teesta river has been flooded.

Meanwhile, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said on Friday that the North and North-Eastern rivers will keep continue rising in the next 24 hours.

According to meteorological agencies, there is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the northern, north-eastern and adjoining upstream parts of Bangladesh in next 48 hours.

“As a result, the Teesta, Dharla, Dudkumar, Upper Karatoa, Upper Atrai, Kulikh, Tangon, Punarbhaba rivers of the northern region and the Surma, Kushiyara, Someswari, Jadukata, Bhugai-Kangsha and Sarigowan rivers of the north-eastern region may rise at times during these periods,” Sarder Udoy Raihan, Executive Engineer of BWDB also in-charge of FFWC, told this correspondent on Friday.

He further said that the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river is a in rising trend, while the Ganges-Padma river is in a falling trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours.

Asaf-ud-Daula, Executive Engineer of Teesta Barrage Dalia Branch of Water Development Board (WDB), said that the flow of Teesta water has increased due to heavy rains and hill slopes from upstream.

“We are controlling water as we opened all the gates of the barrage.

At present, Teesta water is flowing 11 cm above the danger mark at Dalia Point.

If rainfall decreases in the upstream than the water flow will decrease too,” he said in reply to a query.

Aminur Rahman of Char Gobardhan under Lalmonirhat district said that many low-lying areas have already been gone under flood water.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Light to moderate and widespread extremely heavy rainfall activity is very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam and Meghalaya in the next 48 hours.

However, Bangladesh Meteorology Department (BMD) in its Friday bulletin said that light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over the country.

“Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country,” said a met office forecast for the next 24 hours.

The axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across northern part of Bangladesh.

One of its associated troughs extends up to North Bay Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.

Country’s maximum rainfall for the last twenty-four hours till 6am today was recorded by 125 millimeters (mm) at Sitakunda.
