Rights groups demand justice for Rohingya genocide
Staff Reporter :
A coalition of rights organisations demanded justice and accountability for the Rohingya genocide, which was carried out by the Myanmar army six years ago.
The group also highlights the global community’s double standards in resolving the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, Cox’s Bazar CSO and NGO Forum (CCNF) along with Equity and Justice Working Group Bangladesh (EquityBD) underscore the need for sustained efforts to address the crisis.
The statement underscores that despite the passage of six years, a lasting solution to the crisis remains elusive.
While Bangladesh’s compassionate act of providing refuge to the oppressed Rohingya community is acknowledged, the responsibility for resolving the crisis now largely rests on the nation’s shoulders.
The joint statement emphasises that the Rohingya crisis should have been tackled through collaborative efforts involving international organisations, particularly the United Nations.
However, such efforts have been hindered by the negative influence of certain member states, revealing a significant gap in the UN’s intended role and raising concerns about the credibility of various countries and organisations.
The joint statement strongly criticises the inconsistent positions taken by numerous nations and organizations concerning the Rohingya crisis.
It asserts that Myanmar’s military junta has systematically carried out ethnic genocide against the Rohingya population in Rakhine state.
The organisations call for stringent penalties to be imposed on those responsible for these heinous atrocities.
The coalition urges the Western nations and human rights organisations to move beyond mere rhetoric and take concrete actions.
While acknowledging their role in advocating for refugee rights, the organisations stress the urgency of a resolute response to the Rohingya crisis, one that is grounded in a genuine commitment to justice.
