Floods likely to deteriorate in south, north-eastern regions

Flood situation in the country’s north-eastern and south-eastern regions are likely to be deteriorated rapidly as there are chances for extremely heavy rain fall in the upstream, which will continue at list five days.
According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), all the major rivers, except the Kushiyara, in the south-eastern region of the country may rise rapidly in next 24-72 hours and during these periods water may cross respective danger levels at some points for a short period.
On the other hand, the Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Ganges and Padma Rivers are in steady state which may continue in next 24 hours.
Apart from this, many coastal areas on Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar have submerged due to tidal surge, which created severe sufferings for the people.
Except the Kushiyara, all the major rivers in the North-eastern region of the country are in a rising trend.
According to meteorological agencies, there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the north-eastern & adjacent upstream parts of Bangladesh in next 24-72 hours, the FFWC report said.
For this reason, all the major rivers-Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, Khowai, Sarigowain, Jhalukhali, Bhugai-Kangsha, Someswari and Jadukata-in the North-eastern region of the country may rise rapidly at times during these periods.
According to meteorological agencies, there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the South-eastern hill basin and adjacent upstream parts of Bangladesh in next 24-72 hours, Mehadi Hasan, Assistant Engineer of BWDB, told this correspondent.
For this reason, all the major rivers-Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Karnafuli, Sangu, Matamuhuri-in the south-eastern region of the country may rise rapidly at times during these periods & may cross respective danger levels at some points for a short period, he added. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal , Sikkim, Jharkhand and Bihar in the next three days.
It also said that light to moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall activity very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur during next 5 days.
Besides, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Meghalaya in the next two days, the IMD report said. Our Chattogram Bureau reports: Low-lying areas in Chattogram city remained under waist-deep water for the fifth consecutive days on Sunday due to heavy rain and the tidal surge, causing sufferings to the city dwellers and others in the district.
The areas that went under water included Agrabad CDA Residential Area, Shantibag, Beparipara, Halishahar, DT Road, Commerce College Road, Bakalia, Rahatarpool, Saraipara, Patharghata, Badurtala, Muradpur, Chawkbazar, Asadganj, Gate 2 Area, DC Road, Bahaddarhat, Sulabhbahar, Muradpur, CWASA Circle of Chattogram city, according to the residents.
The heavy rain caused immense suffering to the city dwellers as no transport was available and electricity supply remained shut in the marooned areas.
Schoolgoing children and office goers had to suffer as no transport, except rickshaws, were available in the waterlogged areas.
Besides, electricity supply remained shut in the low-lying area as meters went under water in those areas, said PDB engineer Rezaul Karim.
Chattogram Met Office official Bishwajit Chowdhury said that they recorded 220mm rainfall in the city.
Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal no 3 as deep convection is taking place over North Bay due to strong monsoon.
Heavy rainfall is likely to continue at places over Chattogram division and there is a chance of landslides during the heavy rain. The people of Port city have been suffering from water stagnation for a decade.
The government has undertaken some projects to remove water stagnation in the city which are underway.
Meanwhile, Upazilas of Raozan, Hathazari, Fatikchari, Boalkali, Patiya, Anowara, Banskhali, Satkania, Lohagara were severely affected with flash flood waster and heavy rainfall .
The inner roads of these upazila gone under water halting traffic movement.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over the country and at many places over the northern region with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.
