300 families marooned as embankment collapses in Bagerhat

A flood protection embankment along the Bhairab River at Bhadrapara in sadar upazila was washed away by the tidal surges on Friday, rending 300 families of three villages trapped.
A vast portion of Bhadrapara, Boitpur and Bemorta villages have been flooded with fish of 20-25 enclosures washed away.
The residents of the three villages demanded immediate steps to repair the collapsed embankment.
Mashiur Rahman Badsha, owner of a fish enclosure at Bhadrapara village, said when the flood protection embankment collapsed in the afternoon water entered his fish enclosure and washed away all fish, causing him loss of Tk 10 lakh.
Alamgir Hossain, a resident of the village said, “We have been suffering amid the knee-deep water in the houses. Even we could not cook properly as the yards of the houses were submerged.” Md Masum Billah, executive engineer of local Water Development Board, said Dartana and Bhairab rivers were flowing 12 cm above their danger marks while the water level of different canals and water bodies also increased.
“We were informed that low-lying areas of different villages have been flooded and steps will be taken to build ring dam after the recession of the tidal water.
Labouerer killed in Fakirhat
Bagerhat Correspondent adds: A labouer named Sajib (17) who was engaged in the repairing works of Dhaka-Khulna Highways at Piljang area under Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district met his tragic end when a loaded speeding truck bound for Khulna dashed him violently and fled away. As a result, the-ill fated Sajib was killed on the spot. Late Sajib was the son of one Rustam Ali of Kapilmuni area under Paikgacha Upazila in Khulna district.
Police said, the accident was taken place on Monday morning at about 10-30 am when deceased Sajib was working the repairing works of the Highways at Piljanga area along with other labourers the speeding killer truck ran over him and fled away. Consequently, the unfortunate Sajib died on the spot. On information police of Fakirhat Model PS and the Highway police of Katakhali Highway police rushed to the spot and recovered the dead body. On the other hand, the killer truck was seized and its driver Ruhul Amin was arrested from Katakhali area. SI Md. Kamruzzaman, police Sergeant of Mollahat Highway PS confirmed the matter and told, the truck was held along its driver and after completing the legal proceedings the dead body was handed over to the family-members.
Another report states that a wood-trader named Moni Sardar (45) met his tragic end when he was thrown out from a 3 wheelers, locally known as Nasimon on Muniganj Road at Battala area under Bagerhat Pourashava on Wednesday at noon. He was the son of one Tayab Ali Sardar of village Noapara, within Gotapara Union under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.K M Azizul Islam, Officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model PS confirmed the matter and told, the decease Moni Sardar was returning home from Bagerhat district town after selling wood to a (wood) whole seller was returning home by a 3-wheelers at noon and when it was crossing a broken road at Battala area under Munigang in the Pourashava he was, somehow, thrown out from it and fell on the the road. As a result, he was fatally injured.
The man was admitted to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to injuries on the same day while he was undergoing treatment.
