Tamim steps down as ODI captain

Captain of Bangladesh ODI Cricket team Tamim Iqbal has stepped down from the role, the 34-year-old announced on Thursday.

“I thought that it would be better for the betterment of my team to step down,” Tamim said adding that he informed the Prime Minister about his decision.

Tamim arrived at BCB President Nazmul Hassan’s residence at around 8.00pm to sit with the latter.

Tamim returned to the country on 31st July after receiving treatment in London. Earlier, he stated that he would sit with the board to discuss his future.

Tamim Iqbal will not feature in the upcoming Asia Cup as he is yet to regain full fitness. After a meeting involving all parties – Tamim, Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon, MP, Cricket Operations Chairman of BCB Jalal Yunus, National team Chief Physician Debashish Chowdhury – it has been decided that the left-handed opener will not be part of Bangladesh’s squad for the multinational tournament starting on 31st August.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Cricket Operations Chairman Jalal Yunus confirmed that Tamim would not return as a player for the upcoming Asia Cup but will make himself available for the World Cup in India.

The BCB is yet to decide on who will lead the Tigers in the Asia Cup.

Bangladesh will begin their Asia Cup challenge on 31st August when they will take on Sri Lanka in Kandy. The Tigers will face Afghanistan in their final group-stage fixture on 3rd September.
