Rafiqul Islam Tipu, an organiser and renowned face in the country’s sports community, passed away last afternoon at Azgar Ali Hospital in the capital.
He was 69.
He left behind his wife and a daughter and a host of relatives and well-wishers.
The former general secretary of Table Tennis Federation was admitted to the Azgar Ali Hospital after suddenly falling on the stairs at his residence on Monday last and received severe head injuries.
He was under treatment at the hospital in a critical condition. A CT scan report found blood clots in his brain, and he was kept under observation at the intensive care unit of the hospital. Later, he was taken to life support on the same day before being pronounced dead at 3.03pm on Tuesday.
Tipu was currently an executive member of Bangladesh Archery Federation. Apart from serving the archery and table tennis federations, he was associated as a member of different committees in different national and international events for the last four decades.
His namaz-e-janaza was held at Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex at 5:30pm on Tuesday.
In a condolence message, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Zahid Ahsan Russel expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Tipu.
