Bangladesh failed to get a good result in South Asian Football (SAFF) Championship for five consecutive times. Bangladesh Football team last reached the semi-final stage of SAFF Championship in 2009. They ousted from the group stage for five consecutive times before the recently concluded SAFF Championship. The SAFF Championship 2023 was held at Bengaluru in India recently. After 14 years, the red-and-green outfit played in the semi-final of the SAFF Championship. Bangladesh, Lebanon, Maldives, Bhutan were in Group-B of SAFF Championship 2023.
Bangladesh had a sorrow start as they lost to Lebanon by two goals to nil in their opening Group-B match on June 22.
Bangladesh defeated Maldives by 3-1 goals in their second Group-B match on June 25. The red-and-green outfit thrashed Bhutan by 3-1 goals in their third Group-B match on June 28.
Lebanon emerged the champions of the Group-B, while Bangladesh became runners-up in the Group-B.
But Bangladesh lost to Kuwait by a solitary goal in the semi-final on July 1. The stipulated ninety-minute match was ended in a goalless draw. Thus, the match was turned into extra-time. After giving a heroic fight, Bangladesh lost to Kuwait in the extra time. Thus, the red-and-green outfit bade the SAFF Championship 2023 good-by after holding their heads high.
It may be mentioned that Bangladesh clichéd the SAFF Championship trophy for just one time. They beat Maldives in the final at home in the year of 2003.
Meanwhile, according to the latest FIFA ranking, World Cup champions 2022 Argentine have retained their top spot. France have taken second position, Brazil third, England fourth, Belgium fifth, Croatia sixth, Netherlands seventh, Italy eighth, Portugal ninth and Spain 10th.
