60 BNP men held, 5,000 sued across country

Following Tuesday’s three-pronged clashes with law enforcers, Awami League and BNP leaders and activists during the nationwide BNP’s peaceful road march, police registered a number of cases against about 5,000 opposition men by name or mentioning them as unknown in different districts including Dhaka.

Meanwhile, police have arrested at least 60 BNP leaders and activists across the country in the last 24 hours, showing them as accused of these cases.
About 1,229 BNP men were sued on Wednesday in two cases over the clash between the party members and Chhatra League activists of Government Bangla College unit in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.
Rubel Hossain, a student of the college, filed a case with Darussalam Police Station against 120 named and 500 unknown persons.

In the case statement, the complainant mentioned that the accused attacked him and other college students in an attempt to murder. They also torched his motorcycle.
Mohidur Rahman, a staff of the college, filed the other case with the same police station, accusing 109 named and 500 unnamed persons for illegally entering the college and carrying out vandalism.
Among the accused, 28 have been arrested so far, Aminul Bashar, officer-in-charge of Darussalam Police Station told this correspondent.
Several people were injured in the clash that occurred when a road march of BNP reached near the college in the capital’s Mirpur.

They had announced the road march programme to press home their one- point demand for the resignation of the government.
In Khulna: Police has filed a case against 80 leaders and activists of Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal, two associate organisations of the main opposition BNP, for their alleged involvement in obstructing police from performing duties, attacking them and vandalizing vehicles in Khulna during Tuesday’s road march.
Khulna Sadar Police Station’s sub-inspector (SI) Md Shariful Islam filed the case on Tuesday night.

The case was filed against 14 named people including vice-president of Juba Dal Nazmul Huda Chowdhury Sagar, convenor of Khulna city unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Istiaq Ahmed Isti, member secretary Tajim Biswas, BNP leaders Masud Parvez Babu, Mahbub Hasan Piaru, Ibadul Haque Rubayet, Md. Helal Ahmed Sumon, Md. Robi, Asaduzzaman Mithu, Helal Hossain Gazi, Belal Hossain Gazi, Md. Nasim, Sheikh Nadimuzzaman Jonny and Khairuzzaman Sajib.

SI Shariful said, “They attacked us suddenly, police officers could die. One officer is taking treatment at a hospital.”
In Pirojpur: A case was filed against 380 BNP leaders and activists in connection with the clash during Tuesday’s road march with police in Pirojpur.
Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Sub-inspector Maksud filed the case last night.

In the case, 80 were made named accused and 200-300 accused were unnamed, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Abir Mohammad Hossain said.
According to the OC, 15 of the accused were arrested.

BNP leaders and activists started the march in front of the district’s stadium on Tuesday. The clash happened around 11:00am when the police put up barricade. At least 25 BNP men were injured during the incident, the party claimed.
Seven policemen and a video journalist of a private TV channel were also injured in the clash, said the case statement.
In Bogura: Around 211 leaders and activists of BNP in the district have been made accused in four cases filed over Tuesday’s clashes. Meanwhile, BNP Bogura District General Secretary Ali Azgar Talukdar Hena and former convener of Sechchasebak Dal Majedur Rahman Jewel were arrested in three separate cases under the Special Powers Act and the Explosives Act.
“Yesterday, there was a lot of violence due to BNP’s programme. Two cases have been filed in this incident. BNP leaders and activists ransacked the Bogura Sadar police outpost. Another case has been filed in this incident. A total of 89 people have been charged in three cases. Many names have been mentioned in the case. However, for the sake of the investigation, the name will not be disclosed now,” Bogura Sadar police station inspector Shahinuzzaman said confirming the arrests.

“A team from the detective branch (DB) picked them up from their respective homes after 3am on Wednesday. Later in the morning, they were shown arrest,” Bogura BNP President and Municipal Mayor Rezaul Karim Badsha said.
Three cases were registered with Bogra Sadar police station and one with Dupchanchia police station.
About 10 policemen and hundreds of BNP activists were injured.

In Kishoreganj: Police have filed a case against 89 BNP leaders and activists on charge of attacking police during BNP’s Tuesday’s road march in the district.
Sub Inspector Fazlur Rahman of Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station filed the case on Wednesday morning.
Mohammad Daud, officer-in-charge of Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station, said Jubo Dal President Khasruzzaman Sharif, district Swechhasebak Dal member secretary Abu Naser Sumon and district Jubo Dal organising secretary Tarekuzzaman among 19 were named in the case. Police, however, didn’t arrest anyone in this connection, he added.

According to case statement, 19 policemen were injured in a clash with BNP activists during the party’s road march programme in Rathkhola area of the district on Tuesday.
District BNP vice president Jahangir Alam Molla said at least 50 partymen were injured in Tuesday’s clash. They have been undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
In Feni: Police have filed two separate cases against 2,000 BNP men including its affiliate organisations in connection with clashes centring the party’s Tuesday road march in the district. A total of 88 people have been named in the case while the rest are unknown.

SI Hayat Ullah of Feni town police outpost filed the cases with the Feni Model Police Station under the Explosives Act on allegations of vandalism and obstruction to police duty.
The main accused of the cases are-Feni district BNP convener Sheikh Farid Bahar, Member Secretary Alal Uddin, Joint Convener Yakub Nabi, Juba Dal leaders Zakir Hossain, Anwar Hossain Patwary and Mesbah Uddin.

In Khagrachari: Police registered a case against 157 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations, accusing them of obstructing government work, assaulting and injuring the police.
Sub-Inspector (SI)Minhajul Abedin filed the case with Khagrachari Sadar Police Station on Wednesday morning. A total of 157people have been named in the case while 700 are unknown.
The main accused in the case are District BNP Vice President Prabin Chandra Chakma, General Secretary MN Absar, Joint General Secretary Advocate Abdul Malek Mintu, Treasurer Mofizur Rahman, Municipal BNP unit President Abdur Rab Raja, District Jubo Dal President Mahbubul Alam Sabuj, District JCD President Saidul Hossain Sumon, General Secretary Jahedul Alam, Organizing Secretary of District Swechasebak Dal Noor Mohammad Hriday. According to police, at 15 BNP men are arrested in this connection.
