12th anniversary of Mirsarai tragedy today

The 12th anniversary of the Mirsarai tragedy, one of the worst road accidents in the country which saw the deaths of scores of school students, is today (July 11).

On July 11, 2011, a total of 45 people including 42 students of Abu Torab High School, Abu Torab Primary School, Abu Torab Fazil Madrasha and Professor Kamal Uddin Chowdhury College, were killed when a pick-up truck carrying them veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch in Mirsarai.

They were returning home from the final football match of Bangabandhu, Bangamata Gold Cup when the accident took place.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to the spot to condole the mournful families. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, former President Badruddoza Chowdhury, then Jatiya Party Chairman late Hussain Muhammad Ershad visited the spot.

Marjina Akhter, head teacher of Abu Torab High School, said that in memory of the students who were killed in the horrific road crash, wreaths were placed at the memorials ‘Abeg’ and ‘Antim’, on school premises at 11 am on Tuesday.

Besides, a Dua Mahfil for salvation of the departed souls of the victims will be held after Zohr prayers, she added.
