Hazrat Shahjalal remains as mismanaged an airport as ever
Air passengers using the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport came down heavily on the airport authorities, alleging that they face harassment, mismanagement and misconduct by staff on a regular basis. At a public hearing organised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), regular travellers also said they have to endure various forms of suffering due to inadequate passenger seating capacity, mishandling of luggage by airport staff and mosquito menace.
Several passengers have complained that they never noticed any improvement in the decade. CAAB authorities assured that the raised issues will be looked into seriously and that these irregularities and those responsible for their negligence will be held accountable. The authorities assured strict measures for timely luggage handling.
The sorry state of cleanliness and maintenance is another area where the airport falls short. Filthy restrooms with broken fixtures, unhygienic food courts, and poorly maintained seating areas are a common sight. This disregard for basic sanitation not only tarnishes the airport’s image but also poses a significant health risk to travelers. With the constant influx of passengers, it is imperative that the authorities prioritise cleanliness and regular maintenance to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
The mismanagement at Dhaka airport reflects a larger systemic issue within the aviation sector in Bangladesh. Authorities need to take immediate action to address these concerns and restore the trust of travelers. Effective management strategies, increased investment in infrastructure, and improved training for airport personnel are vital steps to rectify the prevailing issues.
Dhaka airport holds great potential as a crucial hub connecting Bangladesh to the rest of the world. However, unless the rampant mismanagement is addressed promptly and comprehensively, its reputation will continue to suffer, and travelers will be left disillusioned. It is high time that the authorities take a proactive stance in revamping the operations, restoring order, and prioritizing the comfort and safety of passengers.
