Refugee crisis needs collective responsibility to resolve

Dr Matiur Rahman :

The global refugee crisis has escalated recently, with millions displaced. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) mentioned that currently more than 110 million people were forcibly displaced globally – a record number propelled by the war in Ukraine and other global conflicts.
UNHCR also noted that with record numbers of people forced to flee their homes, the international community must work together to give refugees more hope and opportunities while they are away from home.
The most effective way to support refugees is to integrate them into the communities where they have found safety – that means making sure they can apply for jobs, enrol in schools, and access services like housing and health care. Inclusion paves the way for long-term solutions for refugees and displaced people, allowing them to thrive in a new country or prepare for a safe return to their home country.
The Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh is an important humanitarian issue. The Rohingya people are an ethnic minority group who are Muslim by religion and have faced severe persecution and violence in Myanmar. Due to conflict and persecution, many Rohingya people have been forced to leave their homes and seek shelter in Bangladesh.
The infiltration of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh started in the 1970s. In August 2017, a large number of Rohingya people entered Bangladesh. Millions of Rohingya fled to Bangladesh due to the military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. They took refuge in Cox’s Bazar, a district in the southeastern part of Bangladesh, and created a massive humanitarian emergency.
More than 1 million Rohingya refugees took shelter in the camps of Cox’s Bazar. Camps like Kutupalong and Balukhali are among the largest refugee settlements in the world. Rohingya refugees face various challenges, including housing, food, safe water, sanitation facilities, health care, education, and livelihood opportunities.
The Government of Bangladesh and international humanitarian agencies are working to address the immediate needs of the Rohingya refugees. Efforts are being made to provide the displaced Rohingya population with food, shelter, healthcare, and essential services. However, the protracted nature of the crisis requires sustained support and long-term solutions to ensure Rohingya refugees’ welfare and prospects.
International attention and support are crucial in solving Bangladesh’s Rohingya refugee crisis. The Government of Bangladesh, other countries, and international organizations are working to address the root causes of displacement and to create conditions for the safe and voluntary return of the Rohingya people to their country with respect, ensuring their dignity, safety, and human rights.
The situation of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh remains a complex and challenging issue. Continued international solidarity, support, and diplomatic efforts are needed to address the immediate and long-term needs of Rohingya refugees and to find a sustainable solution to the crisis.
World Refugee Day is an annual observance held on June 20th to raise awareness about the plight of refugees worldwide. It is an opportunity to recognize refugees’ courage and resilience and show support for their well-being and rights. This year the theme of the day is was”Hope away from home – a world where refugees are always included.”
It is a powerful theme emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and belonging for refugees. It highlights the aspiration for a global society that recognizes and values refugees’ contributions, rights, and dignity.
This theme carries several key messages. It acknowledges the courage, resilience, and determination of refugees who have been forced to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. It recognizes their strength and their unwavering hope for a better future.
The theme underscores the need for inclusivity, where refugees are embraced and integrated into their host communities. It emphasizes that refugees should not be seen as outsiders but as valued members with much to contribute to society.
By emphasizing that refugees should always be included, the theme highlights the importance of upholding the rights of refugees, including access to education, healthcare, employment, and legal protection. It advocates for equal opportunities and fair treatment for all, regardless of their refugee status.
The theme encourages challenging stereotypes and prejudices associated with refugees. It promotes the idea that refugees should not be stigmatized but embraced with empathy, compassion, and understanding.
The theme emphasizes the international community’s collective responsibility in addressing the refugee crisis. It calls for global solidarity, cooperation, and collaboration among governments, organizations, and individuals to find sustainable solutions and create a more inclusive world.
By adopting this theme, World Refugee Day 2023 aims to inspire individuals, communities, and policymakers to work towards creating a world where refugees are fully included, their rights are protected, and they can rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. It highlights the vision of a society that recognizes the value and potential of refugees and ensures that they are never left behind.
