It is not possible to hold any free, fair and impartial elections under the present government and that has been proved several times. The general people have the belief that elections to some city corporations held under the Awami League (AL)-led government were not conducted properly.
Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman and Deputy Leader of Opposition in Parliament Golam Mohammad Quader made the above remarks during a view exchange meeting with the leaders of Jatiya Sanskrit Party at the JaPa Chairman’s Banani office on Saturday evening.
He also said that the transparency in elections has been destroying through using EVMs deliberately.
“Many have complained that EVMs are being tampered with and people are being brought from outside for deploying inside the polling booths. People from different agencies are being used to create fear in the elections. The ruling party men are intimidating the supporters of the rival candidate and not even allowing them to enter the centres. The ruling party supporters are bringing their own people to vote,” he said.
Golam Mohammad Quader said, “We are still in the elections because we promised that we will participate in all the elections till the national polls. The people of the country can see how the election system is working. Just we are participating in the elections and the voters are saying that they failed to cast votes and even go to the polling centres. The common people are now telling that the results of the polls were not as expected by them.”
JaPa Chairman said that they are doing politics to meet the needs of the country and the nation. The nation needs an accountable government which could be ensured only through fair elections, he added.
He said, “There can’t be sustainable and people-oriented development without an accountable government. Without an accountable government, it is not possible to stop corruption, looting and money laundering. Therefore, we are doing politics to establish an accountable government through free and fair elections.”
