DSE turnover dips below Tk5b-mark after two-month

The daily turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) dropped below Tk 5 billion-mark after two-month on Thursday as investors were mostly reluctant to put fresh bets just ahead of monetary policy statements.
Market insiders said most of the investors followed a cautious stance and waited for the monetary policy statement as the Bangladesh Bank will be unveiled on Sunday next.
Also, many investors continued to cash in on stocks ahead of Eid festival and did not inject fresh funds.
Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.65 billion on the county’s prime bourse, which was 36 per cent lower over the previous day.
It was the lowest single-day turnover since April 17 this year, when turnover totaled recorded Tk 4.43 billion.
However, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 5.26 points to settle at 6,280, after losing 78 points in the past four trading days.
The DS30 Index, which consists of blue-chip companies, also advanced 1.42 points to 2,182 and the DSES Index, which represents Shariah-based companies, gained 1.03 points to 1,365.
Of the 340 issues traded, 89 closed higher, 62 lower and 189 remained unchanged on the DSE floor.
Bangladesh Shipping Corporation became the most-traded stock with shares worth Tk 236 million changing hands, followed by Navana Pharma, Meghna Life Insurance, Sea Pearl Beach Resorts and Genex Infosys.
Apex Tannery was the day’s top gainer, gaining 9.93 per cent while Bangs was the worst loser, losing 6.60 per cent.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also edged up after four days with the CSE All Share Price Index (CASPI) gaining 12 points to settle at 18,560 and its Selective Categories Index (CSCX) rising 6 points to close at 11,102.
The port city’s bourse traded 4.76 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover value of Tk 146 million.
